Creation
Joseph Haydn
Creation
At the end of his long life, Joseph Haydn wrote two major operas – Creation and Four Seasons, which are not just his peak works but at the same time also some of the best oratory operas written at that time.
The oratory Creation that will be staged as a concert was composed in 1798 following the libretto of Baron Gottfried van Swieten. It is an epic story of the creation of the world in which the archangels Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael provide detailed recollection of God’s acts of creating the world in seven days. In the last part the parents of all mankind, Adam and Eve, spend happy days in paradise. Solo songs alternate with sophisticated choirs inspired by the grand oratories of Georg Friedrich Händel.
