GIUDITTA
Franz Lehár
GIUDITTA
"It was just a fairy tale."
Lehár's swan song premiered in 1934 at the Vienna State Opera, with Jarmila Novotná in the lead role alongside the famous Richard Tauber. The story of Giuditta is set in the attractive scenery of the Mediterranean and the colourful North African metropolis, and its romantic music takes the viewer to the world of black-and-white film dramas of the 1930s. The main character resembles the famous operatic Carmen – Giuditta also follows her transient passions towards men, who prostrate themselves at her feet due to her beauty.
Lehár's Giuditta is strongly connected with Plzeň: it was there that the premiere of the work in the Czech language took place in December 1934. Now, after more than ninety years, the operetta returns to the stage of the J. K. Tyl Theatre.
