Lady Macbeth - 1865
Based on the short story by Nikolai Leskov.
A short story by Russian writer Nikolai Semyonovich Leskov from 1865 became the basis for the opera by Dmitri Shostakovich Lady Macbeth Of The Mtsensk District (after edition in 1963 Kateřina Izmailová) the production of which in the early 1930s caused displeasure of Soviet dictator Stalin so much that the entire local music modernism was rejected as formalistic, even vulgar. Choreographer and director Libor Vaculík, whose numerous works have been presented in the DJKT’s ballet repertoire, chose passages from Shostakovich's music for a dance drama on the New Theatre’s stage, in which, among other things, the artistic experience of soloist Jarmila Hruškociová in the lead role stands out.
