REQUIEM IN THE CATHEDRAL
The Autumn Requiem in St. Bartholomew's Cathedral has a tradition of several years. This time it will present a unique opportunity to get acquainted with a long-overlooked jewel of European sacred music.
Antonín Rejcha (1770–1836), an outstanding composer and music theorist working for many years in France, completed his Requiem in 1808. This monumental work was ahead of its time in its romantic expression, complexity of structure and power of message. Rejcha's mass for the departed was only discovered, along with his other manuscripts, at the National Library in Paris in the second half of the 20th century and has since been performed numerously in Europe and America.
