The bartered bride
Bedřich Smetana
The bartered bride
Since the first production in Pilsen in 1869, The Bartered Bride has never disappeared for a longer period of time from the opera repertoire and is therefore very well known to our audience. Generations of Pilsen opera singers have matured in the roles in this opera.
Smetana wrote it after his debut work, the historical opera Brandenburgers in Bohemia, as an opera from a rural setting. Although The Bartered Bride is conceived as a comic opera, its main plot is very serious: after the birth of their children, the parents agree on their future marriage. Only Jeník's trick and cleverness will contribute to the successful end of the opera, when he gets his beloved Mařenka and when ‘a good cause has succeeded and faithful love has won’.
