Carmen
Georges Bizet
Carmen
Bizet’s Carmen belongs to the greatest repertoire keepers of opera theatres. The libretto was written by an experienced duo of H. Meilhac and L. Halévy upon Prosper Mérimée’s novel that was based on a true story.
Carmen was something entirely new for his contemporaries as it realistically presents the story of an ill-fated love of Don José and Carmen the gypsy who provokes him to jealousy by falling in love with Escamillo the toreador. José does not let Carmen to go to corrida where Escamillo is winning and murders her. Bizet’s fascinating music took inspiration from the rhythms of Spanish folk music, mainly seguidilla and habanera. Besides the famous arias and duets the opera thrills also with its spellbinding chorals.
Bizet died three months after an unsuccessful premiere of Carmen and did not see its massive success that came later.
